Charles O'Hara Booth (1800 - 1851), born Basingstoke, Hampshire, England, joined the 21st Fusiliers in 1820. He arrived in Van Diemen's Land on the 'Georgiana' in February 1833 and was appointed commandant of the Port Arthur convict settlement, with jurisdiction over all stations on Tasman Peninsula. This designation changed to civil commandant under the probation system. He was effecient and impartial and both his personal qualities and his administration received praise from his contemporaries.
