The Van Diemen's Land Company was formed in May 1824 with the primary aim of ensuring cheap supply of wool for British textile factories. 143,500 hectares of land in the north of Tasmania was granted to the Company through an 1825 Royal Charter. A group of English officials arrived in Van Diemens Land in March 1826 to begin establishing the Company- chief agent (Curr), Stephen Adey (superintendent), Alexander Goldie (agriculturalist), Henry Hellyer (surveyor and architect), Joseph Fossey and Clement Lorymer (surveyors). ;;In October 1827, the Company's grant was split with an added 'allowance' for 'useless land'. From 1828 the Surrey and Hampshire Hills were developed as the principal sheep, wool and grain production centres. Woolnorth (41,000 hectare, est. 1829) and Circular Head were established as farms, with two more farms set up in 'settled districts' as stock depots. Ultimately the holdings of the Company included 100,000 acres at Cape Grim and 26,725 acres on nearby islands; 20,000 acres at Circular Head; 150,000 acres at Surrey Hills and 10,000 acres at the Hampshire Hills, 10,000 acres at Middlesex Plains, plus a 50,000-acre strip along the Emu Bay road.;;Company establishments in 1832 consisted of Surrey/Hampshire Hills (population 62 men, 7 women and 10 children) with a store at Emu Bay; Woolnorth (24 men, 11 women and 25 children) and Circular Head (45 men, 11 women and 25 children). Circular Head was developed as the principal establishment. ;;The development of the Company and land in the north of the State saw the displacement and murder of many Tasmanian Aboriginals. The records of the Company also describe mistreatment of indentured servants. VDL Company oversaw 35 convicts in 1827 and had 117 on its books in 1835. ;;Sheep and wool were not a great success for the Company. In 1841 James Gibson was appointed as Chief Agent of the Company. Gibson oversaw the move towards a focus on income generation through land development. This saw the company being key in the development of the township of Stanley and Burnie (Emu Bay). ;;Changes to the 1825 Act in Britain gave greater flexibility to the Company. Significant steps included the development of subsidiaries, such as the Emu Bay and Mount Bischoff Railway Company Ltd (1875, 1882) or the Burnie (Tasmania) Timber and Brick Company Ltd (1908). Flocks and herds were restored to take advantage of the west coast mineral boom. In 1954, Pat Busby, a Tasmanian, became the first non-British Director of the Company. In the mid to late 20th century the VDL Company focused on dairy activities, sheep, beef, prime lamb and tourism at Woolnorth. The VDL and its principle asset, Woolnorth, became part of Tasman Agriculture Limited in 1993. New Plymouth District Council (through Taranaki Investment Management Limited) in New Zealand, was primary shareholder. While with Tasman Agriculture Limited the name 'Van Diemens Land Company' was still used. Tasman Agriculture Ltd went into voluntary liquidation in 1993 following restructuring. This lead to the creation of Tasman Farms Ltd, with Tasman Farms as being the owner of the VDL Company. In 2004 VDL bought all the shares in a company which owned land in the Circular Head region, Tasman Farmdale Ltd. In 2016 Tasman Farms Ltd sold the VDL Company to Moon Lake Investments for A$280 million. As at 2019 Moonlake Investments were operating the VDL Company as the Van Dairy Group Pty Ltd, trading as 'VDL Farms'. Van Dairy/VDL Farms incorporated a total of 25 dairy farms and 19,000 cows, making it Australia's biggest milk producer. In 2016 VAN Milk was established as a sister company to VDL Farms. In 2021, 11 farms (comprising 2200 hectares all outside of the Woolnorth gates, and around 5000 cows) from the VDL Farms were sold to Melbourne investment company Prime Value for $62.5AU. These assets were added to Prime Value's existing 327ha, Tarkine Farm. The VDL company records are held on indefinite loan by Tasmanian Archives, Libraries Tasmania. The records are diverse and extensive. A large amount are available on microfilm on site at Libraries Tasmania. A selection of the records were also filmed as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project, 1960-1961,1964 at the offices of the Van Diemen's Land Company, London. (AJCP reel M337-M364, M585-M589).
