Description:
James Cubbiston Sutherland was born in Jamaica in 1795 to a Scottish couple, Arther Sutherland and Keth Cubison [spellings as per records]. In Edinburgh Sutherland was apprenticed to AL Ramage, John Blair, and later John Dundas. He married Lucy Turnbull in Edinburgh on 11/10/1822. James, his wife Lucy, and his sister Anne, arrived in Hobart Town per the Berwick 22/6/1823. Sutherland obtained a grant of land on the Isis River between the townships of Lincoln and Auburn in the Parish of Lennox, County of Somerset (about 20km west of Campbell Town). The family stayed in Hobart for 2 months before travelling to their property, which they named 'Rothbury'. James and Lucy had two children - a daughter Marianne Lucy (30/03/1825 - 8/4/1827), and a son, Arthur Thomas George (23/6/1827). Sutherland was a JP from 1826-87 and 1846-47. He is noted in the Wayn index as being a member of the firm 'Sutherland and Allan', Elizabeth Street, Hobart Town in 1833. Two additional land parcels were granted to J C Sutherland, in 1833 and 1839. The Sutherlands sold Rothbury in 1856, returning to England on the 21st of June per the Wellington. They are noted in the 1861 England Census as living at Marylebone, England. Lucy died in 1869, James in 1880, and their son in 1894.
