Description:
William Dean (1800-1879), a farmer from Middlesex, arrived with his wife Sarah in Tasmania in 1824. They purchased Belmont, an established estate along the banks of the Derwent, upriver from New Norfolk. Sarah and William had three children in England, and seven in Tasmania. Sarah passed away in 1844, and in 1851 William remarried to Mary, daughter of Josiah Spode. The Deans stayed on in the district and had a further six children. After the Spode family returned to England to live, moved into the Spode's house at Shooter's Hill. Five of the Dean children moved to the Huon area as early settlers. Their experiences can be seen in Johnson Dean's (1830-1908) 'On Sea and Land', and in Henry Dean's (1838-1905) extensive diaries (1876-9). Henry Dean (1838-1905) married Clara Dyer (1839-1916). Their son was Frank Barclay Dean (1874-c.1920), who married Miriam Margaret Bramich (1882-1962).
