Miss Hayter was the protegee of Elizabeth Fry and was the only agent of her Ladies Committee to come to Tasmania to ameliorate the conditions of female convicts. ;;She was matron on board the ship Rajah, which left Woolwich, England, on 5th April 1841.;;She lived for a time at Government House and in 1843 married Capt. Charles Ferguson, captain of the ship Rajah and later Chief Harbour Master of Victoria. They had seven children.
