Charles Gruncell (3/4/1852-29/5/1930) was a school teacher and amateur photographer. His English parents, George a tailor and Mary, arrived in Hobart in 1848 per the Princess Royal. Charles had several siblings, including a brother George, who was a priest with the Church of England. Charles opened a school on Brisbane Street c.1880, before moving the school to Harrington Street, where it ran as the 'Harrington St School' until its closure in the 1920s. He married fellow teacher Alice Paulina Holme in 1891 at the Church of Scotland, Bathurst Street. Charles Gruncells photographs are held in many collections, often unattributed. He often stamped the backs of prints with 'Sirius photography'. Alice died 3/7/1925. Gruncell died in Hobart 29/5/1930 at 201 Bathurst Street where he was living with his sister Jane. In his will he left his photographic equipment to Frederick Gordon Robinson.
