James Robert Fulton the younger was the second son of Colonel James Robert Fulton (1822-1875) of Leith; in the period in which the diaries were written he was living in his mother's house, Park House at the Forth (now called Kirami). Colonel Fulton died while on leave from the Indian Army and the family decided to settle permanently on the Forth. James Fulton the younger left Tasmania to work in NSW; he married Annie Champion, eldest daughter of Rev. Elias Champion, Rector of St John's, Launceston & Leith.
