Claudia Margaret (Peggy) Dean (1929-2018) was an author and avid historian. She published a range of books including 'Cattle King of Van Diemen's Land: William Field 1774-1837' winner of the Lilian Watson family History award for 2000. Adrian Barclay Dean (1931-2023), shipwright, amateur artist, and teacher started designing and building boats in 1948. He moved south from Burnie to pursue his interest, working for the shipwright Jock Muir at Battery Point. A skilled carpenter, in 1959 he spent 13 months on Macquarie Island as the 12th ANARE's carpenter. Sketches, field notes and letters from this voyage were donated to the Australian Antarctic Division. Having taught at the first wooden boat school in Australia in Margate in the late 1980's, Dean was one of the first teachers at the Franklin Wooden Boat Centre when it opened in 1992, His strong interest in water vessels saw him become an active member of the Derwent and Tasmanian Canoe Clubs and the Tasmanian Sea Canoeing Club. His designs include the popular Greenlander Sea Kayak. Designed in 1970s the Greenlander is still in production. Dean also taught trade subjects with the Education Department and the Friends School. Adrian Dean married Claudia (Peggy) White in 1953 and had five children - Claudia, Jennifer, Keren, John and Rosemary. The family lived in the Sheffield Queenstown area before moving to Hobart. Adrian and Claudia collected a wide range of family history material. Included is material pertaining to the White, Spence, Maclean, Field, Dean, Goodwin, Dyer, Singleton, Bramich, Inall, McCormack, Elmer, Lindsay, Yates, Watt, and Wyatt families.
