The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was first established in Tasmania in 1872 as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and in 1956 was granted the title 'Royal' by Royal Warrant. It became a national organisation in 1981 when all state societies agreed to join and become RSPCA Australia. The Society's primary objective has been to prevent animal cruelty
