Description:
Frederick Edward Maning was born in Dublin in 1811 and came to Hobart in May of 1824 with his family. His father joined the Customs Department after reneging on a land grant. Maning's brothers became merchants in Hobart while Frederick left for New Zealand in 1833. He became a well known writer of early New Zealand history and judge of the Native Land Court.
