Hugh Ross was a solicitor born in Scotland who emigrated to Van Diemen's Land, arriving on the Regalia on 30 December 1822. He practiced privately and also worked for the government as Crown Solicitor from 1832 - 1841 after which he was prosecuted for misappropriation of government funds. He was found not guilty on a legal technicality and thereafter left for New Zealand where he died in 1869.
