Joseph Connor was a self-taught artist who began painting at aged 35. He was born in Hobart in 1875 to carpenter, Michael Connor and his wife Ellen (formerly Skinner). Joseph married Amy Fitch in 1903. They had two sons, Albert Joseph and Alan Frederick and one daughter, Kathleen Isobel (later Ritchie). Alan and Albert (Bert) became drapers in the business that became known as A.J. Connor and Co in Harrington Street, Hobart. Joseph worked as Manager of the Furniture and Antiques Department at Brownell's throughout his painting life. The family lived at 'Greendale' in St Canice Avenue, Sandy Bay, for many years;;Connor was a foundation member of the Australian Water Colour Institute and the Contemporary Group, Sydney and a life member of the Art Society of Tasmania. His work, which was exhibited in America, Britain and France was almost all watercolour landscapes of Hobart and the Tasmanian countryside. He exhibited at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 and some of his works were hung at Government House Hobart for a period of time. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in February, 1958;;
