Description:
Amy Rowntree was an educationalist and amateur historian. She was very influential in the development of early childhood education in Tasmania, becoming the first female inspector of infant schools in Tasmania in 1919. Active in many organisations, she was a member of the Fellowship of Australian Writers, Royal Society of Tasmania, University Women Graduates' Association, Arts Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, the French Circle, Tasmanian Historical Research Association and the Battery Point Progress Association. She had a strong affiliation with St George's Anglican Church. She was appointed O.B.E. in 1949.
