The Tasmanian Society was established after a public meeting was convened on 3 December 1935 with a view to the preservation of historical traditions and relics of Tasmania. The precise objects were to : mark historical sites (including historical buildings), preserve historical monuments (including landmarks) and to organise commemorations of historical anniversaries. The Society comprised a State Executive Committee and a Southern and Northern divisional Committee.;;;;On 5 May 1947 the society underwent a name change to become the Historical Society of Tasmania, but it still functioned on the lines of the old constitution.
