Dame Mabel Flora Miller - Mabel Miller (nee Goodhart) was born on 30 November 1906 in NSW. She graduated with a law degree and practiced as a barrister in Sydney and London before settling in Tasmania. She was active in many organisations, including National Council of Women, the Australian Red Cross Society, the Mary Ogilvy Homes Society and United Ex-Service Women's Homes Association. She became the first female member of the Hobart City Council and served as deputy lord mayor in 1954-56 and 1964-70. In 1955 she became the first woman to be elected to the House of Assembly where she served to 1964. In 1967 Miller was appointed D.B.E.
