Christopher St Baibe Shields had come to Victoria prior to World War 1 to work on his uncle's property. He subsequently went to King Island, aged about 23 years and then left in late 1914 - early 1915 to return to Britain to enlist in the war. He was trained as a surveyor and later became a District Commissioner on the Gold Coast (Ghana) where he made some of the first maps.
