Maum was the son of William Maum who arrived from Norfolk Island on the porpoise on 17 Jan 1808, having previously been transprorted to New South Wales on the ship Minerva after being convicted in Ireland for conspiracy against the British. William lived in Hobart where he worked as a Policeman.
