William Langdon (1790 - 1879), naval officer and landowner, born at Montacute vicarage, Somerset, UK first arrived in Hobart in Oct 1821 on the 'Luisitania' and in 1823 received a grant of 1500 acres on the Clyde River near Bothwell which he added to by purchase and named Montacute. On his rearrival in the colony with his wife Anne nee Elliot and their daughter Anne in Sept 1834, he settled on his estate until 1838 when he returned to England. There he entertained visitors from the colony and encouraged others to emigrate. Following the death of his wife in 1844, he returned to Tasmania in 1846. ;;;;In 1853 he was promoted to honorary commander in the navy and was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1859 until his retirement in 1872. He died at his home Derwentwater, Sandy Bay on the 23 May 1879. His second wife , with whom he had three sons and three daughters, died at Hobart on 21 May 1902 aged 84.
