William John Savigny (known as John or Jack) was born on 16 Jan 1892 to John Horatio Savigny and Emily nee Henry. He was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School where his grandfather Rev William H Savigny was headmaster (1872-85). For some years John was with the Union Steamship Company and in 1919 he started in business as Savigny & Smith, Mercantile Brokers, Import and Export Brokers. The 1923 PO Directory lists also manufacturers agents and general commission agents, located in the AMP building, 62 Cameron Street, Launceston. ;;During the First World War he was a Lieutenant in the Home Forces. He took an active part in the formation of the Cradle Mt Lake St Clair Reserve; he was an original member (Secretary) of the Northern Board from 1927 to 1930. He remained an active member until 1947 when its headquarters were removed to Hobart.;;During the Second World War Mr Savigny was the Director of the Red Cross. After the end of the war he continued as Chairman of the Red Cross Social Service Committee in Northern Tasmania. He was on the Launceston Church Grammar School Board, and was President of the Launceston Club. He was Vice-President of St John Ambulance Brigade, Launceston No 1 Ambulance Division. He was an angler and golfer and member of the Ornithological Society. He was a Director of C H Smith & Co.
