Description:
H H Baily (1839 - 15/06/1896) was a painter and professional photographer. Baily was born in Tasmania to John Richard Baily, steward to Bishop Francis Russell Nixon, and Elizabeth Hall . Baily travelled to England in 1861 to attend the London School of Photography. Sketch to Windward (W L Crowther Library) was made on this voyage. Returning to Tasmania in the mid 1860s, he set up as a photographer and artist in Hobart Town offering vignettes, cartes de visite, miniature portraits, and copying of oil paintings. In 1866 he exhibited 'Album Portraits' at the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. Baily published stereo-photographs of landscape subjects in 1867 from his studio at 94 Liverpool Street, moving to 139 Elizabeth Street later that year. Baily married Celia Jane Bullock. Their son, Henry Hobart (b.1868), became a photographer, continuing the Baily Firm until 1918.
