The son of George C. Barnes, (1868-1949) of 'Baden' 9 Warwick St, Hobart. George J.R. Barnes enlisted in 12th Batt AIF 21 Jan 1918. On his return, he lived in Warwick St, but on his marriage moved to 209 Campbell Street where he lived until his death. He was a carpenter by trade, and in his father's will (AD960/76/31128) is listed as a building inspector.
