William Field was born in London in 1881. He emigrated to Australia after spending time in South Africa at the end of the Boer War. He worked in Sydney and Melbourne before settling in Tasmania at Railton. He was married to Margaret Moynihan in 1912 and established W. Field and Co, merchants with businesses in Rosebery and Railton. There were 7 children from the marriage. William died in 1958.
