Born 3 September 1944 in Elsternwick, Victoria - educated at schools in Tasmania and Victoria. Degree of Batchelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne 1967.;;;;Mr Groom was Tasmanian premier from 1992 until 1996, and member for Denison 1986-2001. A former treasurer and attorney-general, his state ministerial portfolios also included energy, forestry, sea fisheries, mines, Aboriginal affairs, justice and state development. Mr Groom was also federal member for Braddon 1975-1984, federal housing and construction minister 1978-1980 and federal environment, housing and community development minister 1977-78. Mr Groom has said that a career highlight, as a federal member in the late 1970s, was saving the Mt Lyell mine in a desperate battle in partnership with the Queenstown community and the Trades and Labour Council, after the company announced it was shutting down. ;;;;Mr Groom has also said that working with the Aboriginal community to achieve the transfer of 12 parcels of land in the mid-1990s was one of his most satisfying achievements as premier. He has been Administrative Appeals Tribunal deputy president since 2004, Stolen Generations Assessor for Tasmania from 2006 and is the Independent Assessor of the Abuse of Children in State Care. ;;;;He is also the current chairman of Southern Cross Care Australia and was previously on the Salvation Army's state development council and part of the state's Red Shield Appeal. Mr Groom is among 30 Australians to be named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) the second highest Australia Day honour for service to the Tasmanian Parliament and a range of community leadership roles. ;;
