Description:
The Nursing Mothers' Association of Australia (NMAA) began in Melbourne in 1964 and the Tasmanian Branch started in about 1971. The Branch was administered by a Branch President, nominated by Members and appointed by the National Board. The Branch was Divided into 3 Regions, North West, North and South. Members belonged to local Groups who made up the regions, which were coordinated by a Regional Representative. The NMAA aimed to support, inform and encourage mothers who wished to breastfeed. The Association provided counselling on breast feeding management or problems by trained Breastfeeding Counsellors, and aimed to promote breastfeeding in the wider community. The NMAA changed its name to the Australian Breastfeeding Association on 1 August 2001.
