Description:
Nigel Brothers, internationally renowned albatross researcher and conservation advocate, was one of Tasmania's longest serving wildlife officers. The Nigel Brothers archival record includes a range of correspondence, field note books, and an extensive collection of 35mm transparencies. ;;Brothers had an early interest in conservation, undertaking volunteer field work while still at school. In 1973, straight from school, he joined the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service as a full time technical officer. From 1973 to 1975 Brothers worked in general wildlife management for the Department (work such as research on macropods, deer and other game species, pardalotes, and mammal surveys), as well as undertaking particular studies (such as undertaking research into Cape Barren Geese, short-tailed Shearwater, and the peregrine falcon). From 1975 to 1977 he was involved in research and management on Macquarie Island (including feral rabbits and cats, wekas, burrowing petrels, other seabirds, and seals). He wintered on the Island in 1976 and 1979. From 1978 Brothers focused his research where possible on sea birds and seals in the Macquarie Island region.;;In the 1980s Brother's research on marine conservation saw him establish strong collaborative relationships with a range of universities and overseas organisations. He visited 280 of Tasmania's 335 offshore islands over the 1980s, surveying their seabird populations. His three children travelled with him on several of these visits. In 1988 Brothers spent 17 days on a Japanese longline fishing vessel in the Southern Ocean, observing first-hand the large numbers of albatross accidently killed. His work on the Shy Albatross led him to undertake extensive research into fisheries and ways of reducing seabird catch. His work on fisheries and albatross saw many technical improvements in the way fishing was undertaken, including the development of bait machines. In 1996 he was awarded the Flora and Fauna Conservation Award in the Banksia Environmental Awards for his contribution towards global conservation of albatross He is recognised internationally as playing a pivotal role in the recognition of threats to albatross and the need for greater conservation efforts.;;As well as his work on Albatross, Brothers undertook a range of studies including work with Australian Gannet population monitoring, diet studies and Cat Island population recovery, and Pedra Branca skink population studies. In 2001 Brothers and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery zoologist David Pemberton published a book called 'Tasmania's Offshore Islands: Seabirds and Other Natural Features'. In 2000 Brothers was a focus of media attention when he alerted authorities to problems with the Australian Antarctic Division's branding of seals on Macquarie Island. ;;He resigned from the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment in May 2001, continuing professionally outside of the public service as a marine ecology and technology consultant. In 2018 Brothers was working for Humane Society International as its seabird expert. His work with HIS included working with South American fishers to assist them to avoid catching and killing seabirds whilst fishing.
