Description:
The Good Neighbour Council was a Commonwealth-funded, nationwide movement that aimed to welcome and assist post-Second World War refugees and settlers. A central co-ordinating body oversaw local branches of delegates from existing voluntary bodies. Local branches encouraged citizenship and brought settlers into contact with local people. The central Council coordinated volunteer training, information production and dissemination (such as holding seminars on the recognition of qualifications and welfare entitlements). As the concept of multiculturalism replaced those of assimilation and integration, ethnic groups sought direct funding and Good Neighbour formally ceased in 1979, though branches still operated in Glenorchy and Launceston.
