Description:
Mervyn George Everett was a lawyer, politician and judge. He was elected to the House of Assembly in 1964 as an Australian Labor Party member for Denison and held the portfolio of Minister for Health. Labor lost power in 1969 but won the 1972 election with Everett becoming deputy-premier, attorney-general, minister for the environment, and racing and gaming. He resigned from the Labor ministry over the flooding of Lake Pedder. In 1974 he became a senator and worked on numerous government committees. Returning to private practice, Everett was appointed in 1978 a judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania. He resigned in 1984 to become president of the Inter-State Commission and that year was also appointed to the Federal Court of Australia. He died in Singapore in 1988.
