George Bruce was born circa 1776 at Shadwell, London. He was transported to New South Wales as a convict. He claims to be the first European resident in New Zealand and was conferred the rank of Chief in 1806. He served with the Royal Navy from April 1813 until March 1817. He died at the Greenwich Hospital, London on 9 Feb 1819.
