Robert Norman Smith and his family lived at "Beulah" in High Street, Launceston for many years. When first married, he had built "Narrryngill" in Elphin Road, later occupied by the Teesdale Smiths. Mrs Robert Norman Smith was a member of the Johnstone family, and the Johnstone family letters came from her. Mr Robert Norman Smith was the manager of CH Smith, the firm of merchants, and retired from business in the early 1930's. Mrs Lawrence, Miss Nance Carington Smith , Arthur and Jack and Robert Carington Smith are the children of Robert Norman Smith. The Johnstone family letters were mostly written by Mrs RN Smith's mother Muriel Matilda Johnstone. "Beulah" was also the home of the Johnstone family, before being sold to the Smith family. Muriel Matilda Johnstone was the daughter of William John Johnstone and Mary Groom. William John Johnstone was the son of William and Martha Matilda Johnstone the founder of the firm William Johnstone, Merchants and later Johnstone and Wilmot.
