Duncan Kerr, son of Duncan and Gertrude Colquhoun-Kerr, was born in Hobart and attended Claremont Primary and High Schools. He graduated from the University of Tasmania with both a Law degree and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. He began his practice as a lawyer in 1980, working nationally and internationally as a barrister and solicitor; this included time with the Tasmanian State Government in the Solicitor-General's Department, Dean at the Faculty of Law in Papua New Guinea and Principal Solicitor in the Aboriginal Legal Service in New South Wales.;;Duncan Kerr stood unsuccessfully for the Federal seat of Braddon in 1977. Ten years later, in 1987, he contested the Federal seat of Denison which he won for the Australian Labor Party. He served as Minister for Justice between 1993 and 1996 and as Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs from December 2007 to December 2009. He retired from politics in July 2010 and returned to full time legal practice. In 2004 he had been appointed Senior Counsel and in 2012 became a Federal Court Judge;;Duncan Kerr is also an author of several books on law and politics.;;
