Description:
Originally known as Chalmers Free Church, this Gothic Revival church, at 7 Frederick Street (134 St Johns St) Launceston, was opened in 1860. The architect was William Henry Clayton and the first service took place on 15 January 1860 by the Reverend James Lindsay. In 1896 the congregation of Chalmers Church became part of the United Presbyterian Church of Tasmania. ;;In 1968-69 restoration work was undertaken on the building. The Church's congregation joined the Uniting Church in 1977. In 1977 Chalmers Presbyterian Church joined the Uniting Church. Members of the Christ Church Congregational Church joined with the Chalmers Church in 1978/79. The Church became the Chalmers/Christ Church Uniting Church.;;Following consolidation of properties, the Uniting Church deconsecrated and sold the Chalmers church in 1981. The Fincham organ and other church furnishings were removed. Church records were sent to the Paterson Street Uniting Church (later Pilgrim Church).;;The Church has a distinctive exterior. It is the result of oil- based paint being mistakenly applied to the building's limestone and brick facade in 1976. After being the home of the Launceston Players theatre group, and a private residence, the church was purchased in 2011 by Walker Designs. Extensive renovations were undertaken with the business winning several design awards. Chalmers Church is listed as significant with the National Trust, the Heritage Council and National Estate.
