Joan Pullen (14.7.1915-28.9.1999) was the eldest daughter of Charles Morrison Stephenson and Edith Lucy Brewer. Her parents were first cousins, descendents of Peter Brewer of 'Bowood'. Her father was a descendant of Martin Mowbray Stephenson of "Barnbougle". Joan's sister, Emily Faye Morrison Brewer was born in 1916. Both sisters were educated at Launceston Church Grammar School. Joan trained as a general nurse at St Margaret's private hospital, Launceston. She qualified as a theatre sister at the LGH, and as a midwife at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Hobart. Faye travelled to the UK in 1945, where she studied Science at Edinburgh University. On her return to Australia she taught Chemistry at Melbourne University until her retirement. She never married and died in 1995.;;;;Joan was a member of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Service, from 10.1.1941-1.5.1946. She served in the Middle East with the 2/1 Australian field Ambulance and later in New Guinea with the 2/9 Australian General Hospital. She became known as 'Stevie' and met her future husband, Dr Wallace James Pullen in new Guinea. They were married in London in 1949.;;;;Dr Pullen gained his medical degree at Sydney University and joined the Army Medical Corps in 1942. He was posted to New guinea with the 2nd field Ambulance unit. After the war he undertook further study at St Stephen's Hospital London. Stevie and Wal returned to Sydney in 1950. Dr Pullen retired from practice in 1981 and died in 1995. Joan was a strong supporter of the RSL. She often returned to Tasmania to visit family, friends and the family holiday home at Lulworth.;;;;Joan died at Gosford Hospital on 28.9.1999. She and her sister Faye were childless.
