Archibald Lawrence Meston, educationist, historian and anthropologist, was born at Launceston on 5 June 1890, the elder son of Andrew Meston, carpenter, and Louisa Lawrence. He was educated at Glen Dhu Primary School, trained at the Teachers' College, Hobart, in 1906-08, gained a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Tasmania in 1914 and was awarded first class honours in English in 1922. He taught in primary schools, and from 1914 in secondary schools. In 1938 he was appointed government education officer in Hobart. He implemented some far-reaching reforms in teaching.;;;;In 1935 Meston published "A Junior History of Australia". He also published articles on Tasmanian history and anthropology in the "Papers & Proceedings" of the Royal Society of Tasmania and in the "Records of the Queen Victoria Museum", Launceston. He was a founding member of the editorial board of "Historical Studies - Australia and New Zealand".;;;;A L Meston married Winifred Rockwell in Sydney on 5 January 1916 and had three daughters. He died on 21 December 1951. Meston's library, known as the "Meston Collection" is owned by the Launceston City Council and is part of the Local Studies Collection of the Launceston Library.
