Richard Lewis (1789-1867) was a merchant, son of Rev David Lewis and Mary Anne Lloyd. He arrived in Hobart Town in 1815 and a year later married Isabella MacKellar. They had 11 children. They included daughters Jane Maria, Caroline, Isabella, Mary Louisa and Elizabeth and sons Richard, Charles Benjamin, Neil, Thomas, David and George.;;Lewis was appointed as the government appraiser and auctioneer in 1816 which began his successful merchant career.;;He was one of the founding proprietors of Bank of Van Diemen's Land in 1823.;;Lewis conducted his business from the property on the corner of Collins and Argyle Street, Hobart. His eldest sons, David and Neil, joined him as partners in the family business.;;Richard Lewis also owned property at New Town, Clarence and in Cambridge. The town of Lewisham was named after him.;;The Lewis Family collection gives an insight into a large and successful colonial family.;;
