Early in 1873 it was suggested that a fire insurance company be formed upon the "mutual principle" . That is, the insured will participate in the profits of the association without liability. The object for which the Company was established was to effect and grant insurance against loss or damage by fire and to invest money in or upon property and securities of all descriptions in Tasmania.;;The Royal Insurance Company took over the Company in 1962. The Board continued as a local advisory board until the Company's termination in 1980
