Vernon Pennefather was born in Launceston, Tasmania at the Queen Victoria Hospital. He attended Launceston High School, and was employed by Humphreys Bros Pty. Ltd in 1943. He joined the R.A.A.F. in April 1945 but was not called up. He became a pilot in 1949 and re joined the R.A.A.F. as air crew and moved to Point Cook in Victoria. He was a distinguished pilot and was posted all over the world. In 1953 he married Valerie Wilkins in Hampshire, England. He left the R.A.A.F. in 1955 and returned to Launceston. He gained employment as a bursar in several Launceston schools and retired in 1987. He continued part time flying instruction with the Tasmanian Aero Club and gained life membership in 1980. He was also awarded life membership of the Tamar Yacht Club in 1985.
