Charlotte Cleveland, nee Barry, as born on 20 July 1819, the eldest of three children. Her father James Barry was a stationer and paper merchant in London. Charlotte married William Cleveland, a shipping merchant, on 10 December 1844 at Hampstead. They had six children by 1852; the four surviving children accompanied their parents to Van Diemen's Land on the 'Mermaid', leaving Gravesend on 9 April 1852. More children were born in the colony. William died on 12 August 1879 and Charlotte died on 16 October 1884. They were both buried at the Cypress Street Cemetery
