Charles George Croft was born about 1824 at Alnwick, Northumberland, England. He was apprenticed as a tailor and travelled to many cities in England plying his trade. In 1850 he went to the United States of America and in 1852 sailed for the gold fields in Victoria, Australia. In the mid 1850s he went to Hobart and later to Launceston where he remained and opened his own tailoring business. He married Rebecca Forrester and had three sons and six daughters; two of the latter died young. ;;;;George joined the forerunner of the Launceston Fire Brigade when it was formed in June 1857 and resigned as Superintendent 32 years later in June 1889. He gained the rank of Sergeant and was the Master Tailor for the Launceston Volunteer Artillery Corps, having joined in 1860. He became a Grand Master of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and was a member of the Masonic fraternity.;;;;Rebecca Croft died on 10 November 1878 and Charles died aged 66 on 30 April 1890. They were both buried in the Scotch Cemetery, Launceston.
