Frederick Howell Ault was born in 1882 at Durham Ox, Victoria, the third of eleven children to Joseph Albert Ault and Charlotte Amelia Ault (nee Aston). He left school at 12 to work on farms. Returning to study later he performed quite well winning accolades. He was employed in 1907 as Assistant with the Postmasters General Department, Victoria.;;He married Mabel Lydia Leslie in March 1911 and they lived in the Moonee Ponds area until 1918 when they moved to East Kew, Victoria. Lilian Charlotte Ault was born in 1911 and Edwin Leslie Ault in 1916. He was transferred to Hobart, the family left Melbourne and arrived in Hobart on 1 July 1925. After a week or so, the family moved to the house at 2 Carriage Drive in The Domain.;;Frederick the outdoors and enjoyed his hobby in photography. He recorded details of his photos firstly in a notebook and then on the back of the prints. He took his camera everywhere he went and used it frequently when he was around the state for Postmasters General work, walking to and from work, and when on recreational trips at weekends or holidays.;;He returned to Victoria in 1942 and died on 31 July 1954.
