Thomas Lewis, son of George Lewis and Mary Anne Hopcraft, was born in 1806 in Westminster, Middlesex, England. Thomas received permission to lead a survey party, with five convicts, into the north-east quarter of Van Diemen's Land in 1829. His subsequent requests for remuneration were refused, and the survey was terminated in 1830.;;Lewis was an associate of Jorgen Jorgenson and Westbury magistrate William Bryan. He was imprisoned in 1834 after becoming involved in Bryan's dispute with William Lyttleton. He was released in 1835, after an appeal to the British Government, and eventually paid 2000 pounds compensation for illegal imprisonment.;;Thomas married ELLEN Hutton Downward (1819-1915) on 23 Jan 1839 in St. Georges, Sorell, Tasmania. Thomas and Ellen had one son William Bryan Thomas Lewis (1839-1928). Thomas Lewis died on 14 Jul 1842 in Brisbane St, Launceston.;;;;William Lewis married Elizabeth Hannah Brame Abbot (1840-1896) in 1867. William and Elizabeth relocated to Swinton, Kew, Victoria where they had five of their six children - Vernon Thomas (1867-1932), Violet Ellen Jessie (1869-1963), Maude Ellerslie (1871-1920), Claude Peyton Abbot (1874-1960) and Eliot Tremearne Lewis (1875-1949). There sixth child Reginald Jamieson Lewis was born on 25 Aug 1878 in Fingal, Tasmania.;;;;Reginald Jamieson (1878-1936) married Christina Margaret Robertson Smith (1872-1947) in March 1912 in Tasmania.
