Charles William Garrard was born in England in 1852 and after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the London University he travelled to Tasmania per the S.S "Doric," arriving on 17 February 1885. In May 1885 Garrard joined the teaching staff of Christ's College (in Macquarie Street), as an assistant master. Several months later he was dismissed, an action which resulted in a 'Wrongful Dismissal' case being brought against the college.;;Garrard died on 7 February 1887 of pulmary pthithis at his residence in Short Street, Glebe, Hobart. In his death notice it was noted that he was the son of William Garrard Esq. of Beccles, Suffolk in England.
