Description:
The management and control of prisons and the safe custody, punishment and training of prisoners confined therein. The Department was also responsible for managing prisoners on parole or probation until 1946. Royal Commission into Hobart Gaol had made recommendations on wider issues which resulted in the Probation and Parole Service being transferred to the Attorney-General's Department in 1946. NOTE ON TERMINOLOGY: It has not always been possible to determine which records relate to: 1. The Gaol proper - for convicted prisoners. 2. The House of Correction/Penitentiary - for convicted prisoners serving sentence. 3. Both the above. Where a series has related only to the Gaol proper this has been indicated but generally it has been assumed that other series relate to both. In general the term 'gaol' has been used for the whole institution unless otherwise indicated. Because the Acts governing penal institutions it is not always clear whether there always was a clearly defined distinction between the two functions.~
