To promote the occupation, cultivation and improvement of the agricultural lands of Tasmania and its dependencies.Proclaimed 20 Jan 1908. (See TGG 21 Jan 1908 p91. Repealed by Tasmanian Development Act No.84 of 1983 The bank, which replaced the Commissioners for State Advances established under an 1898 statute, was created by a proclamation under the State Advances Act and placed under the control of 3 trustees. The Act was amended to replace the trustees with a Board of Management from 1 March 1929. At the same time the Closer Settlement Act was amended to transfer to the Board, plus one additional member provided for in the amending Act, the functions of the Closer Settlement Board. Originally constituted to assist persons who had taken up Crown Land with a view to developing farms, the activities of the bank expanded to encompass loans for a variety of purposes to farmers and fishermen. Limited assistance for the purchase or erection of dwellings was added to the Bank's responsibilities in 1920 and gradually expanded. Following both World Wars the bank was the vehicle used to administer schemes to settle returned servicemen on the land. It was also responsible for administering various relief and adjustment measures, such as the Rural Adjustment Scheme, Fire Damage Relief and the Dairy Productivity Plan. The administration of the bank and all its lending functions were centralised in Hobart. A staff of inspectors were located at Hobart and in regional offices in Launceston, Burnie, Smithton and Scottsdale. The Bank was wound up by the Tasmanian development Act and its functions transferred to a new Authority on 20 December 1983.~
