Description:
The evolution of this Department is more complex than this registration would suggest. Established by warrant for charter of Supreme Court of Van Diemans Land. 1824 - J T Gellibrand, first attorney-general, arrived. 1856 - Position became ministerial. 1934 - Amendment to Public Service Regulation 4, 25 September 1934, T.G.G. P.2492, became separate department. Mar 1983 - Amalgamation of Attorney-Generals Department, Solicitor Generals - Department, Registrar-General Department, Prisons Department, and Corporate Affairs to form Law Department. In 1946, as a result of a Royal Commissions recommendation in 1943, the Probation and Parole Service of the Gaols Department (TA 32) was transferred to the Attorney-Generals Department. In 1955 it was split into Adult and Juvenile Probation and Parole Services, the latter being transferred to the Social Services Department (TA 144).~
