Description:
Regulate and supervise the practice of medicine and pharmacy by registering medical practitioners and licensing pharmacists. Examine candidates for licensing as dentists. Examine and register midwives.;;;;The 1837 Act established a seven member Court to grant letters testimonial to university trained doctors and to examine other practically-experienced persons seeking registration to practice. An amendment in 1842 extended the Court's powers to include the licensing of druggists and chemists. The Dentists Act 1884 empowered the Registrar of Dentists to seek examiners from the Court and this was amended in 1903 to provide for the Court to appoint a Board of Examiners. The Midwifery Nurses Act 1901 provided for the Court to examine and register midwives. In 1908 the powers and functions of the Court were transferred to the newly established Medical Council of Tasmania.
