Under the Advanced Education Amendment Act 1985 the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education (TCAE) became the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology (TSIT). The name change was seen as necessary to distinguish it from Community Colleges at Secondary and TAFE level and was seen as desirable since 'institute' had become an accepted term for tertiary education facilities in Australia.;;;;The TSIT essentially carried on performing unchanged the function of the old TCAE in providing post-secondary education under the 1985 Amendment. ;;;;The TSIT ceased as a separate Institute with the repeal of the 1968 Act under the Higher Education (Amalgamation) Act 1990 which amalgamated the University of Tasmania, the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology and the Australian Maritime College.
