| Description: |
Following a poll of ratepayers, Clarence Municipality reverted from an appointed Commission to an elected Council after an election on 16 Jun 1973 when 3 Councillors were returned for each of the four Wards. The new Council sat for the first time on 11 July 1973. Initially the Council expanded the committee structure it inherited from the Commission, but later reverted to dealing with the bulk of its business in general council meetings. By a proclamation under the Local Government Act, published in the Tasmanian Government Gazette on 16 November 1988, Clarence Municipality became a City on Tasmania Day, (24 November) 1988.
