Description:

Provide and manage social programs including provision of funds to non-government welfare agencies. It also provides and manages suitable accomodation for people who are unable to obtain and maintain occupation of private housing or, where appropriate, provides subsidies to private tenants. Home ownership is made possible through the Departmnet's Home Purchase Scheme. The Department was also responsible for the operation of the State's prison system until 1992, and the probation and parole service. The Department was formed by the amalgamation of the Department of Community Welfare and the Housing Department (except for its Development Division) with the Corrective Services Division and Child Protection Assessment Board Secretariat of the Law Department. From 1 June 1990 a range of community care programs for the aged and the intellectually and physically disabled were transferred from the Department of Health to Community Services. Following the change of government the Corrrective Services Division was transferred to the Department of Justice on 17 February 1992.
