Agency:
Mines Division
Agency Number:
Start Date:
03 Feb 1993
End Date:

Description:
Create data bases and maps of mineral resources and geology. Supervise the transport, storage and use of dangerous goods. Assess groundwater resources and advise on landslips, geological hazards and engineering geology. Created when the former Mines Department was amalgamated with other development agencies. The original intention was to amalgamate the Department of Mines with the Department of Forestry, the Tasmanian Development Authority and the Industry Services Division of the Department of Employment, Industrial Relations and Training to create a new Department of State Development and Resources. Despite technical legal problems affecting Forestry and TDA, the implementation of the changes for Mines and Industry Services went ahead immediately. Ultimately Forestry was corporatised separately, the TDA was abolished in favour of the Board of the new Authority and on 9 November 1994 the Mines Division became Mineral Resources Tasmania within Tasmania Development and Resources.
