Description:
The Department was formed by amalgamating the Department of Employment and Training, the Department of Labour and Industry, the Office of Industrial Relations (from the Department of Premier and Cabinet) and the Further Education Division (of the Education Department). From 1 July 1990 the Department assumed administrative responsibility for the Tasmanian Industrial Commission and the Training Authority of Tasmania. On 18 February 1992, following a change of government, the Industrial Commission was transferred to the Department of Justice (a decision reversed 6 months later). The Industry Services Division was transferred to the new Department of State Development and Resources on 3 February 1993, re-focusing DEIRT as a training and educational body. This was reinforced on 1 March 1994 when the Employment Opportunities Branch was also transferred to State Development and as a consequence the Department was renamed Industrial relations, Vocational Education and Training.~
